Sometimes when faced with a difficult obstacle in life-- a new job, new school, new anything-- it's easy to feel overwhelmed and to start believing the worst about ourselves. Maybe we really don't have what it takes after all, we think. Maybe we should just stay where we are-- whether we like that place or not.

One of the wonderful things about being human is our ability to adapt to new situations. Another is our ability to change and grow.

What new situation is facing you? Whether ...

Something extraordinary happened at a recent conference of Ontario doctors who use methadone to treat people addicted to heroin and other drugs.

Published: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 11:13 AM EST

Many poll respondents acknowledge that there is a problem with heroin in the area.

Our online question: ``Blairsville Borough council recently voted to deny a variance that would have allowed a methadone clinic to open in the borough. What would you think about the opening of such a business in your community?''

Our world today is based upon instant gratification. Taking into consideration all of the technology that allows us to get what we want right when we want it, it's really no wonder that we are trying to apply that standard to our emotional state.

Think of all the ways that people use drugs or alcohol pertaining to instant gratification. If you are having a stressful day...pop a pill and feel de-stressed. If you are feeling a little social anxiety or lack of confidence in a situation...have ...

Since being in recovery for substance abuse there have been little changes in my outlook on life that happen all the time. I can't say that I always notice them right when they happen, but sooner or later it usually hits me. I just came to the realization that I am now a person full of hope. This is quite a contrast to my outlook on life when I was actively addicted. Here is what happened.

I was taking a look online for some addiction related videos and found a series of addiction related videos of Dr. Robert Lefever. In this series he tackles a lot of the main topics of addiction and addiction recovery in a way that can make sense to anyone. One of the videos that I found interesting is called Recovery 7: What Makes An Addict. Here he explains the difference between these people...are you normal, an idiot, or an addict?

Surprise, surprise...I fall into the addict category. ...

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday yesterday, but alas, it is time for us all to get back to our daily schedules for school, work and yes, those clinic visits!

It would be so nice if we could go to a regular doctor to get our methadone like they have for suboxone treatment! I know for a fact the actual methadone medication is cheap, cheap, cheap so it really blows my mind that we are charged like we are for MMT from clinics. There is no regulations on that either.

Hi everyone. I have had an exerience I wanted to share with you all and get your input on it.

I am currently on a dose of 120mg once a day. At my "old" clinic, they started out giving us the name brand METHADONE. (these were orange, football shaped, oblong, pills) After about 1 1/2 - 2 yrs, they started giving us a generic form (white, perfectly round with methadose stamped on them). I was in the process of a dose change at the time so I wasn't able to really tell if there ...

Nice attitude to have and I hope none of his loved ones ever have an opiate addiction because this man sounds like he would be NO help to them whatsoever.
Used appropriately as part of an Methadone Maintenance Treatment Program, methadone does not appear to cause any heart problems, even at quite high doses. There were some concerns during 2001 when LAAM (a long-acting cousin of methadone) was associated with disturbances of normal heartbeat, called cardiac arrhythmias . LAAM was taken off the market in Europe and American doctors were advised to first test patients for any existing arrhythmias before prescribing or continuing LAAM therapy.

Just wonderin how long you guys have to wait to be dosed or if you wait at all? How is it set up they dose you?

At my clinic we all get in line along this long wall and down a hallway,,behind the wall there is 5 windows but there is never 5 nurses, the most I have seen open is 4 and that is very rare usually 2-3 is average. So they dose 2-3 people at a time we go to the window give our number and get dosed. You line u in the order you come in regardless of weather you are getting 1 or 30 doses/takehomes. ...

"They Say" that a huge part of addiction recovery is un-burdening yourself of all those "secrets" that you keep inside because of the fear of judgment. I guess this goes along with Step 5 of the 12 Steps. You admit to your higher power, yourself, and another human being the exact nature of your wrongs.

The purpose of this step is supposed to be about openly acknowledging the positive while committing to work at rectifying your negatives. I do understand the purpose of it, ...

The International center for Advancement of Addiction Treatment (ICAAT) has produced a 15-minute video addressing the “not-in-my-backyard” (NIMBY) phenomenon – probably the greatest barrier to meaningful expansion of methadone treatment availability in America. Throughout the USA, and in many other nations as well, efforts to open new facilities are met with fierce opposition based on fear of resultant crime and a general deterioration of the neighborhood.

This film highlights the patients, ...

Mexico decriminalized small amounts of marijuana, cocaine and heroin on Friday — a move that prosecutors say makes sense even in the midst of the government's grueling battle against drug traffickers.

Here is a key to harmonizing with people who are upset or have a point of view different from your own. Stay so relaxed when you talk to them that you allow yourself to empathize with how they think and feel. That doesn't mean that you give in to people's every whim. It means, instead, that you are so clear and fucused that you can genuinely let other people be who they are, too.

I believe that self-hatred is the reason that I am an addict. Self-hatred is something that all addicts have in common. Let’s face it, if we liked ourselves, even a little, would we be so eager to put an unknown substance, something potentially fatal, a poison, in our body? Would we feed our children, our grandmother, the drugs that we take? Hell, no! We do it because we hate ourselves. Addiction needs self-hatred to breed and we, as addicts, posses this self-hatred.

I loathed myself. I ...

It is a sad day when a neighborhood shoots down a ORT clinic. They don't realize that the same ppl that this clinic would be helping are some of the same people in their "respectable" neighborhood! Opiate addicts aren't just junkies anymore and come from all walks of life! ...

We've all seen the poster of the kitty hanging off the tree limb with the caption "Hang In There Baby". But who would have thought that this little blurb could be the foundation of a healthy spiritual life?

We all have both highs and lows as our life sort of ebbs and flows through time. I guess what I'm realizing is that I need to make the most out of the highs in life so that when the lows come I am better prepared to hang in there.

We're not always going to be feeling ...

For those of us who joined this remarkable website

and not yet contributed any comment or "post" to the

random reflections.

For each of us, life has innumerable reasons which,

on occasion, can bypass our ability to check in with

our brethen in similar states of disarray.

By that I mean, our dependency issues, coping

mechanisms, having been shafted (abused) by

unsavory clinics, or what have you.

DRUG TESTS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT CHECKSWith states across the country feeling the effects of the economic crisis gripping the land, some legislators are engaging in the cheap politics of resentment as a supposed budget-cutting move. In at least six states, bills have been filed that would require people seeking public assistance and/or unemployment benefits to submit to random drug testing, with their benefits at stake.

In Arizona, Hawaii, Missouri, and Oklahoma, bills have been filed that ...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Sophia Grant has used methadone for more than 10 years to treat an addiction to painkillers. Eddy Brown has used it for 18 months.

West Virginia has nine for-profit methadone clinics, and legislators are examining how they work. The Legislature put a moratorium on new clinics in 2007.

Earlier this year, some lawmakers caused a stir when ...

Since those minor aches and pains show up more and more in active addiction...I spent a lot of time "sick".

The tendency to either fake or exaggerate illness as an avoidance tactic did not go away just because I stopped taking drugs.

It seemed that anytime I had an extremely ...
