Sometimes when faced with a difficult obstacle in life-- a new job, new school, new anything-- it's easy to feel overwhelmed and to start believing the worst about ourselves. Maybe we really don't have what it takes after all, we think. Maybe we should just stay where we are-- whether we like that place or not.

One of the wonderful things about being human is our ability to adapt to new situations. Another is our ability to change and grow.

What new situation is facing you? Whether ...

Our world today is based upon instant gratification. Taking into consideration all of the technology that allows us to get what we want right when we want it, it's really no wonder that we are trying to apply that standard to our emotional state.

Think of all the ways that people use drugs or alcohol pertaining to instant gratification. If you are having a stressful day...pop a pill and feel de-stressed. If you are feeling a little social anxiety or lack of confidence in a situation...have ...

Since being in recovery for substance abuse there have been little changes in my outlook on life that happen all the time. I can't say that I always notice them right when they happen, but sooner or later it usually hits me. I just came to the realization that I am now a person full of hope. This is quite a contrast to my outlook on life when I was actively addicted. Here is what happened.

When I was an active addict as soon as my eyes would open in the morning, morning meaning about 11am, ...

I was living under the assumption that things always have a way of working themselves out. Which is true... if you do your part.

Since we work on our ability to "accept the things we can not change" we should definately be working on the other part to that which is having the courage to change the things we can.

I was taking a look online for some addiction related videos and found a series of addiction related videos of Dr. Robert Lefever. In this series he tackles a lot of the main topics of addiction and addiction recovery in a way that can make sense to anyone. One of the videos that I found interesting is called Recovery 7: What Makes An Addict. Here he explains the difference between these people...are you normal, an idiot, or an addict?

Surprise, surprise...I fall into the addict category. ...

This was taken from What Winners Do

At first, the main purpose of entering into addiction recovery was so you would stop drinking, drugging, gambling, over-eating whatever else you did compulsively. You finally realized that you had a problem and needed to stop, ...

Going by the name of my site, What Winners Do, one might get the impression that I am someone with answers...I'm not. I don't think there are too many answers in addiction recovery, mainly there are questions.

The most common second round addictions are overeating, anorexia, bulimia, exercise, gambling, spending, and work. These are just the most common ones...not the only ones. What is difficult with these addictions is ...

For me, this is one of those times when I'm not struggling in my addiction recovery. At the moment, things seem to have fallen into place.

Here is a key to harmonizing with people who are upset or have a point of view different from your own. Stay so relaxed when you talk to them that you allow yourself to empathize with how they think and feel. That doesn't mean that you give in to people's every whim. It means, instead, that you are so clear and fucused that you can genuinely let other people be who they are, too.

I believe that self-hatred is the reason that I am an addict. Self-hatred is something that all addicts have in common. Let’s face it, if we liked ourselves, even a little, would we be so eager to put an unknown substance, something potentially fatal, a poison, in our body? Would we feed our children, our grandmother, the drugs that we take? Hell, no! We do it because we hate ourselves. Addiction needs self-hatred to breed and we, as addicts, posses this self-hatred.

I loathed myself. I ...

We all have both highs and lows as our life sort of ebbs and flows through time. I guess what I'm realizing is that I need to make the most out of the highs in life so that when the lows come I am better prepared to hang in there.

Since those minor aches and pains show up more and more in active addiction...I spent a lot of time "sick".

The tendency to either fake or exaggerate illness as an avoidance tactic did not go away just because I stopped taking drugs.

It's never nice to think about but when you are an addict your top priority, and sometimes your only priority, is drugs. Finding them, affording them, doing them, feeling their effects, coming down off them...finding them again.

Once you are no longer in active addiction you're able to take a clear look at what the important things are in your life. A clear head and a better understanding of yourself will ...

A time comes in your life when you finally get it ... when, in the midst of all your fears and insanity, you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out ENOUGH!!!

Enough fighting and crying or struggling to hold on. And, like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside, you shudder once or twice, you blink back your tears and begin to look at the world through new eyes.

Wasted Time

© Gwen Smith

The time that I've wasted is my biggest regret.

Spending time in "places" I will never forget.

Just sitting and thinking about the things I have done,

The crying, the laughing, the hurt and the fun.

Now, it's just me dealing with my hard-driven guilt,

Behind a wall of emptiness I've allowed to be built.

I'm trapped in my mind, just wanting to run,

Away from the pain where there's laughter and fun.

But, the chase is over and there's no ...

Feeling Good Isn't The Point. For us recovery is more than just pleasure

While in the midst of our addiction, most of us knew exactly how we were going to feel from one day to the next. All we had to do was read the label on the bottle or know what was in the pill. We planned our feelings, and our goal for each day was to feel good. To prevent any uncomfortable or painful feelings and focus only on feeling good and only feeling good.

Once we got into recovery, it was a different ...

In the same way, the obstacles in life are not conquered by fighting them on their own terms or attempting to push them out of the way. The best way to move past a difficult situation is to transform it with positive, productive energy.

No matter how much you push against the darkness it will not go anywhere. ...

ANONYMOUS QUOTE: I USE TO BE A HOPELESS DOPE FIEND, NOW I AM A DOPELESS HOPE FIEND.

WHAT IS HOPE by Vineet Bansal

What hope means

Hope is bright shining light which keeps darkness at the bay

Hope is gentle cold breeze on a hot summer day

Hope is to remain positive when going gets tough

hope is seeking more when others think u had enough

Hope is dreaming of tommorow

Hope is simmering under sorrow

Hope is sparkles when tears in our eyes

STAYING THE COURSE

When riding in an airplane on automatic pilot, I marvel at the way the aircraft stays on course even while bouncing and shaking through pockets of turbulence. Even more significant is the pilot's calm indifference to these minor movements as he checks occasionally to make sure the plane continues on the right course.

Many things that happen to us each day are no more important than the routine turbulence and aircraft encounters. But as sick, compulsive people, we ...

Anger and resentment seemed to be constant companions when I first got clean and sober and the bad thing about it was that I don’t even really know if I understood what I was so angry about! In working my way through recovery, I began to uncover some of the reasons for my anger and resentments. I really hated the fact that I was an addict and I resented the fact that something had so much power over me and in my life. I resented the fact that I had no CONTROL over myself and/or my life! I resented ...

WE ARE SICK PEOPLE TRYING TO GET BETTER, NOT BAD PEOPLE TRYING TO BE GOOD.

So many times, especially during my addiction and in the first year or so of recovery I had a real hard time with my self worth. We know the levels we stooped to just to obtain our drugs and I will be the first to admit, I AM NOT PROUD of some of the thing I have done. In fact, I am very ASHAMED of some of the things I have done and would give anything if I could take them back. I hurt other people, I risked my ...

I am hoping to get a new routine down that will work with my new job and with the kids in school again, I hope that is all behind me. SO! I am back in the saddle again for those of you who do read this section and I will do better for you ...

Each and every day I am faced with a choice – a choice to continue on the path of recovery or a choice to do an about face and return to the insanity of my addiction. One choice leads to life, and the other choice leads to death.

None of us knows for sure, certainly not I, where my next high might lead, but one thing is certain, making the choice gets easier if I really value my recovery. If I truly value my own life, if I truly value my relationship with others and with my Higher Power, ...
