I am involved in somewhat of a debate right now that someone is saying that because I am on methadone that means that I am NOT sober and I disagree, I believe that I am sober because I am not using illicit drugs and I am not intoxicated or affected by the use of the drug (methadone)..........HELP Please

Welcome to the forum aplavsic,

Methadone maintenance is a type of drug replacement treatment that counteracts the craving for abused opioids, such as heroin and prescription opioid drugs.
In many ways, methadone treatment for someone addicted to opioids is like insulin treatment for a diabetic patient. By injecting insulin, a diabetic patient replaces the body’s missing insulin. But unlike insulin, methadone does more than just replace something that is missing. Adequate individualized doses of methadone, taken under medical supervision, stop addictive behavior. Methadone helps people overcome the debilitating influence of illegal opioids, so they can lead healthier, more normal lives.
No one is going to tell a diabetic they shouldn't take their insulin or will they tell a heart patient not to take their life saving heart medication.

Methadone does away with unsuccessful tries to cut down on drug abuse, never-ending searches for more drug, unmet obligations, and continual use of illegal drugs—despite personal harm.

Recovery is an ongoing process, for some it may take years. Unless a person has experienced addiction for themselves, it's hard for them to understand. Unfortunately is is going to be up to you to educate your friend. Please visit our Medical Assisted Treatment of America Inc website. It is a great place to start.
if you need anything or have any questions, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Thankyou very much for the information, it helped alot...I'm just having a hard time getting them to understand that even though I take methadone I'm still sober, they think that being sober means no drugs at all and methadone is a drug.*ugh* take care!

I understand completely and it can be frustrating. You have to worry about you right now and your recovery. Be very proud of yourself for the steps you are taking to secure your recovery.
Hopefully your friend will come around.

Aplavsic the MMT community hears this stuff and worse all the time. Nobody has the right to judge you and you should tell this person to go piss up a rope.

Taking methadone for me now is like taking a vitamin in the morning. But I think that the insulin analogy is great. The difference is that our disease is addiction instead of diabetes and our medication is methadone instead of insulin.

Off topic: jason860, I'm also from London. Maybe we even attend the same clinic!

EXACTLY!!! Cool
I couldn't have said it any better. And another thing we've got to remember is that this is OUR LIFE and OUR TREATMENT! No one else has been crowned the King or Queen of sobriety, so they just don't get to decide who is sober and who is not. Methadone has drastically improved my LIFE and my QUALITY of life... and that's what matters most. Not whether or not I happen to take a medication. Who cares?
