| I recently watched a documentary about opiate addiction called "Cottonland" The documentary takes place in the Maritimes on the east coast of Canada. The methadone maintenance treatment program showed in the doc was only available to opiate addicts that use needles. I was blown away by that. At least one opiate addict admitted to only using needles just so he could qualify for MMT. Does anybody else have knowlege of other MMT programs that only accept addicts using needles?? If so could you pass the info on here, thanks. | |

| At my clinic, you don't have to be an active needle user to get in. The people at the clinic that are using with needles, get into the clinic faster probably because they are higher risk getting HIV, hep. C and other blood-born pathogens. People that are shooting up are at a more advanced state of addiction than just say taking 10 lortabs a day. | |

| No rules like that at my clinic. Course, the clinic in the documentary, did they have a waiting list or anything like that? I know that some clinics do have long waiting lists, especially govt funded ones and in those cases they will give priority to certain pts, such as pregnant women or needle users.
At my clinic there are more non needle users than there are needle users. I think it just depends on the area you live in at what is more readily available there or is the more prevalent problem. | |

| The clinic that I attended didn't have that rule either and there wasn't a waiting list back then. As long as you had used within the last year you were admitted. In fact, I remember they used to run a special for patient referrals. If you referred someone to the clinic and that person stayed at the clinic for a certain length of time you were then given a week of dosing free of charge. | |

| You guys all make good points. In the documentary they really didn't get into specifics with the methadone clinic. Except to say that you had to be a needle user and one of the addicts mentioned poking needles in his arms to make puncture wounds. A waiting list makes the most sense and higher risk addicts being at the top of the list. The documentary did say that the 3 central figures all used MMT to get clean and were still clean. I sent an email to Nance Ackerman, she made the documentary but have not heard back yet. | |
