Hi Dondi,
Do what is comfortable for you. If you are comfortable at tapering 2mg at a time then that is what you should do.
Always keep in mind that if it gets too uncomfortable you can always stop for awhile until your body gets used to the current dose before lowering your dose again.
I can't say that you won't have any discomfort but you can minimize it as much as possible.
Do you have any kind of after care set up for yourself to keep yourself busy and occupied once you stop taking Methadone?
A part of what causes relapse is boredom or at least it was for me. I would be sitting around without anything to do and my mind would start to wander.
Staying busy, going to counseling, meetings, anything that helps. Stay away from old haunts as well. That can get you into trouble quicker than anything.
Please keep us posted as to how you are doing. It would be great to hear from you as you start your new journey.
And please remember that you can come here anytime you need to talk, that's what we are here for.
I'm sure our other members can give you some input as well and will be along to offer their suggestions and support.
Good luck!
Dee
