When I got into MMT recovery 10yrs ago, I weighed 140lb, I now weigh lets just say......over 200 lbs. Most of that was put on in the first several years of treatment. I noticed I would crave sweets when I was normally a potato chip and salty snack person and especially anything chocolate. I wasn't a big chocolate eater before so I know it was something that changed after I was on MMT.

I think part of the weight gain is that for once we are actually "stable" and now that drugs aren't our number one priority anymore, we actually start eating again and eating more regular meals. So naturally we will put on a little bit of weight from that, but I firmly believe that it changed something within my body that affected weight gain.

I have talked to many people that say the same thing. Another thing I have noticed, I don't know if this is scientifically true or not, I haven't been able to find any studies done on the subject, but it seems to me that a lot of long term MMT pts end up with type 2 diabetes, which I am sure is excerbated by the weight gain. I had probs with my blood sugar during both pregnancies, but other than that, I had NO problems with it before MMT. It was only after I started putting on the weight that I started having trouble with it, but it seems to reason that those of us on long term MMT who are steadily gaining weight will eventually have probs w/diabetes.

It is something to think about, that is for sure. I do not like being this overweight, it is very depressing and I feel bad most of time. Not only do I have type 2 diabetes, but I have probs w/my blood pressure and my back and my feet hurt all the time (I am sure because of the excess weight). I also snore alot louder and harder than when I was skinnier which in turn messes with my sleep and how rested I feel.

I have tried diets, I have tried watching what I eat, I have tried changes in our eating habits but I can't seem to shake the weight and still seem to be gaining.

I have been craving a lot of sweet since I have started on MMT. I never craved a donut or a chocolate bar. Now, I like chocolate for breakfast. I got a gym membership recently, I should go more often before the weight really packs on.

In the beginning I weighed about 105 max. Soon I did start to gain weight, I figured it was because I had started to take care of myself and was eating all the right things etc. But the weight gain kept on until I weighed 168lbs. I have had a lot of problems in the past with my back and that extra weight was causing more problems.
But my doctor did a complete blood workup and I was found to be hypothyroid. I figured that after I started on the Thyroid medication my weight would go down some, but so far it hasn't very much.
But there's always hope.

when I got into treatment I was between 105 and 110, and now I am 200....everyone says its bc you are healthier but gosh thats alot of weight...when I had my annual I ask my Dr. about it, and she said methadone does something to the way you metabolize sugar, so who knows lol. All I know is, I have gained ALOT of weight and don't eat enough (sweets or healthy food) to justify that much weight gain in just a little over a year.

I have the same problems. My only question here is, why did it take four years for it to start packing on the weight? It was not until the last two years that I started really gaining the weight. I have been tested before for a overactive thyroid and it came back negative. Can it be different years later maybe. Its really upsetting because I was 250 10 years ago and I lost 125lbs and kept it off for 7 years and then I was prescribed the methadone rather than self medicating and now I'm back up to 220 and have been since 8-9 months after being prescribed it.
My questions here are: has anyone found any answers as to what exactly happens to the body that causes the weight gain? Such as I read on another forum for methadone that there is a hormone that is depleted and you can compensate for the hormone loss with Omega 3. As well as the water retention can be compensated with some herbs(I cant remember exactly right now, sorry) But, does anyone here know of the exacts, or are these things I've been reading on myths most likely? I appreciate all your help and incites!

Reading the posts about weight gain I realize that again, i'm not alone in my struggle with weight gain. In 2000 I weighed about 215 lbs and was fit enough to run marathons, yes, full marathons (26.2 miles). By 2006 I was notrunning anymore but i still wasn't too heavy, weivhing in at about 230 lbs. I started methadone on 4-14-2008. Since then i have gained about 200 lbs. I've been sober since 9-13-08, but my weight is holding me back. I feel people that stair at me and i'm judged. I have lost so much confidence and my inner strength. I feel like ive gained so much weight that i'll never really live life and be happy. The extra weight makes it so tough to do anything. I do work full time as a cook and that activity of being on my fert helps, but not enough. I need to change.

mmtforme,
200 lbs of weight gain is a lot of weight. What does your doctor say about it?
Society does judge and most people would speak up to say they don't but they do and that is a shame.
I for one have learned so much from you through past emails and posts here on this forum. I remember when you reached out to be a guest on the old radio program we used to have and can you imagine how many people you helped that night? I can.
I wish I could help you to feel better about yourself. Please come back more often, you have so much experience and insight to offer.
It would be good to hear from you more.
